City

Ocean City is a peninsula; surrounded by the inlet at the southern tip, the bay on the west, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. You can enter Ocean City by crossing the Route 50 Bridge, by crossing the Route 90 Bridge, or through Delaware via Route 1.

Coming across the Route 50 Bridge brings you into the heart of downtown via a 2 lane highway. Here you will find the typical hustle and bustle of a resort community, with bathers, boardwalk visitors and automobile traffic all vying for their turn at the road.

Crossing additional north at the Route 90 will bring you into Ocean City at 62nd Street. Here you will find low to mid-rise hotels and condos on the Ocean side and a combination of condos, low-rise hotels and market facilities on the bay side. There will be less traffic but keep in mind that Route 90 is a particular lane highway with no selection to pass.

For visitors from the north, entry into Ocean City is best finished via Route 1. Here you will enter Ocean City at the northern end, which has the least whole of traffic. You will find low-rise hotels and condos on the Ocean and along Coastal Highway and homes and low rise hotels and condos on the bay side, with market facilities lining both sides of Coastal Highway.

Where should I stay?

This is a loaded inquire with no acknowledge being the same for everyone. Let's start by breaking Ocean City into 4 areas.

Downtown; this for my purposes will include all things from the inlet north to 27th Street. This includes the entire length of the boardwalk. Select this area if you like to be in the middle of the excitement. Boardwalk shops and entertainment are open until midnight or later during the summer season and is right at your door. Staying in this area is best for the young or the young at heart. It is also ideal for families with teens that feel their children can go off exploring on their own. The boardwalk is well lit and maintains fairly heavy foot traffic until late at night. My personal advice is the Hotel Monte Carlo placed at 216 N Baltimore Ave.

South Center; this for my purposes will include all things from 28th street to 84th Street. This area includes low to mid-rise hotels and condos on the ocean and bay with market facilities lining Coastal Highway. You will also find some good deals on hotels and condos on and nearby Coastal Highway. Keep in mind that Ocean City is not that wide in most areas so walking to the beach is not a major ordeal. I think this area to be the best combination of convenience and quiet for most families. The potential Inn Oceanfront hotel placed on 54th street is well distinguished for families and couples alike and is only 1/2 mile from the convention center.

North Center; this for my purposes will include all things from 85th street to 118th Street. This area is the same as South center except hi-rise hotels begin lining the ocean. From 100th street to 118th street the ocean is virtually lined with hi-rises. For those singles, couples and families that like to be pampered with room service, saunas, etc., this is your area. On the bay side you will find townhouses for larger families, many with your own boat dock. Large families, families sharing a vacation, and boaters will find the largest selection of rentals in this area. The Carousel Resort Hotel & Condominiums is placed ocean front on 117th street. A small history for those new to the area: the Carousel was the first hotel built on the north end of Ocean City, it was built by Bobby Baker (a reputed member of the ("mob"). Needless to say all things is here, along with an indoor ice skating rink, a deli, an ice cream shop, indoor and outdoor pools, jetted tubs, room aid and much more. Other than a trip to the boardwalk there's not much surmise to leave the complex. This is probably my popular hotel in Ocean City and worth a visit even if you don't stay here.

North; this for my purposes will include all things from 119th street to the State line at 146th Street. This area resembles South center except it is less congested with any homes on the bay side. Walking to a cafeteria or store is less likely in this area. For those guests that like to be in a quiet area yet close to the "action" this is the best selection for you. Hotels in this area are not as plentiful but a good selection is the Fenwick Inn.

Special recommendation; just before entering Ocean City from Route 50 you will see the Francis Scott Key Motel on your right. This hotel is placed on 14 acres and has plenty of room for children (of all ages) to play. The indoor pool is used by many local families in the off season for birthday parties. There is plenty of shopping nearby and even has it's own cafeteria and bar. No need to drive into Ocean City, a free shuttle is available during the season that runs every hour from 10:00am to 10:00pm.

As you can see there is something for roughly every person in Ocean City. I don't believe you will be unhappy with any of the areas, but offer this guide as a general form of what each area offers for those guests not customary with Ocean City.

If you are like most population you'd like to have a destination wedding but it's not inherent to get all your family and friends over to Hawaii or Jamaica. Even having your wedding at a destination like Florida can be a challenge if you live in the North East America.

Some of the best beaches are here in Delaware and Maryland, like Dewey Beach with its fun night life, Rehoboth Beach and its artistic community and boardwalk, and you have all of Ocean City beaches, all seven miles of it.

Starting with Delaware beaches because it's the first state and all, when getting married you'll often times need a permit. Me as a photographer or any other expert photographer would need their own permit as well to photo your wedding event. Keep that in mind, because a lot of times the Rangers who patrol the beaches will stop and ask to see it. They are nice about it, often catching you while your setup phase, but just wanted to get that out of the way.

Cape Henlopen State Park is absolutely nice because it has a very large area to get together and get lost in. So if you are reasoning of getting married in the State park, without fail have a map for you and your guests. There are so many romantic spots to get married there, on the jetty of rocks, or maybe at sunset with the lighthouse in the background, or if you have 4 wheel drive you can drive right up on the beach and get married with the towers close by. I was photographing a wedding near the towers at sunset and it was beautiful, and there was no one around for miles.

Lewes beaches are nice because in Lewes there are quite a few places close by that make for great wedding reception areas. There are also a lot of hotels for family members to stay in, I've found that a lot of brides / couples liked the Hotel Rodney in Lewes. I often times go there to get those getting ready shots and found this place to be very beautiful. There is also a bridge prominent to the beaches near the busier part of Lewes, and my friend Rob who is a photographer, took his whole bridal party up on the bridge for a photo. A Lewes police officer saw what was about to happen and helped stop traffic. I just happen to be in the area and thought, what a cool town.

Rehoboth Beach and the boardwalk area makes for a very wide range of places one could get married. With all the hotels and restaurants lining the boardwalk it's so easy to get ready around and pop on down to where your guests have gathered and say your "I Dos" on the beach and you with your guests can go close by to any amount of wedding venues. As this is a more populated area for population if you are having your wedding at Sunset, don't be surprised to find discrete population stopping and watching the festivities, because they will. If any are close to where you planned on getting married, often times they will move for you, and they become more wedding witnesses. And after you kiss, the cheering and clapping start to happen. It's a lot of fun.

Just added south you'll hit Dewey beaches, Bethany Beaches, and Fenwick Island. All great beaches off Route 1 and pretty easy to find. Parking is usually not a question and there are still many inherent wedding reception locations close by.

Going a itsybitsy added south right after Fenwick Island you'll come to Ocean City, and well now you'll have that you gotten married in Maryland instead of Delaware. A dissimilar set of rules and advantages, to name one, No permits, just your marriage license is all you'll need. All the beaches in Ocean City are group beaches and there is nothing, no where saying you can't walk out on the beach with 200 of your guests and get married. If you have that many guests to join you on your wedding day, you are in luck because Ocean City has tons of hotels to choose from. Big hotels like the Carousel with its indoor Ice Rink, the Clarion with its many wedding reception halls, the Golden Sands with its wedding reception area on the 22nd floor overlooking the ocean. On the flip side of that, if you are looking for a small more cozy place to stay with a few guests check out the "Inn on the Ocean" it's a very cute bed & breakfast that I photographed a wedding at.

Some good prominent thoughts to keep at the forefront of your mind, the added downtown you go, down around the boardwalk the more crowded it's going to be. So allow for more time, time your guests will need to get straight through traffic, more time for parking and parking downtown Ocean City is mostly meters and so if you can car pool with other wedding guests try and do so. It may not be a bad idea to get a Limousine to take you and your bridal party to the inlet get married, and allow for some time for you and your photographer to snap some photos, because there are so many photo opportunities down there, like the pier, the boardwalk, the inlet with boats passing by or with the sun setting, or the jetty of rocks.

Getting married added north, you are development out ahead of the game with it being less crowded, more larger hotels and wedding venues, and the beaches are normal not as packed around sunset. Parking, "That was Easy" is what you'll be saying because they have all kinds of side streets to park on and a lot of Ocean City Hotels have their own parking area. Another think I like is that a lot of these places in north Oc have their own mini beaches like the Golden Sands, Clarion, and Ocean Pines Beach Club. Now even view the Ocean Pines Beach Club is more mid range on 49th street, it's without fail worth mentioning because every wedding I've photographed there has been awesome. Its great with its mini beach there, and the main beach right over the dune area for more photos, and the Ocean Pines Beach Club is a great wedding venue both the upstairs area or downstairs is absolutely great for you and your guests to party the night away. And for late, later night partying you can cross Coastal Hwy and be right at Seacreats, Jamaica Usa. Now you're talking a destination wedding and not too far away.
